Five Short Constructed Responses: The Scarlet Ibis

This is how I open Romeo and Juliet. Students learn the prologue is a Shakespearean sonnet, mark the rhyme scheme and syllables, and then rewrite it in their own language. It's built for grades 8-10 and takes about one class period.
Start with a warmup about feuds and grudges. Then the notes cover the sonnet form: 14 lines, iambic pentameter, three quatrains and a couplet, ABAB CDCD EFEF GG, and the volta. The full prologue is on a slide with the rhyme scheme and line numbers marked, plus a slide that counts out the syllables.
For the Translation Remix, partners rewrite the prologue line by line in modern English. Slang and vernacular are welcome. I include a bilingual model where key words are swapped into Spanish to show what a remix can look like. The handout ends with a one-paragraph reflection on astrology that ties into 'star-crossed.'
