Rules of the Island: Novel Launch Week on Society & Human Nature (Grades 8–12)

Unit launch · Grades 8–12 · PowerPoint (18 slides) + PDF (26 pages), ZIP · $7

Hook students on the big questions before they read page one. Pairs dig into six codes of conduct: the Code of Hammurabi, Magna Carta, the Preamble, the Bill of Rights, a kindergarten code and an outdoor club pledge. Then they jigsaw into expert groups to compare how each code handles responsibility, authority and human behavior. Groups finish by writing their own Island Charter for a society with no adults.

Students also make predictions from book covers and sort 10 quotes from history and literature into a good vs. evil debate. A reflection paragraph asks what our behavior really says about human nature. "The Raft," an original coming-of-age short story, teaches the innocence-to-understanding story arc with a story map.

The 18-slide deck runs the week. It has a daily welcome slide with a Question of the Day, an agenda and materials, plus timers for the jigsaw rounds. Two 4-square grammar reviews (nouns and verbs) go straight into notebooks. It works with Lord of the Flies, The Hunger Games, Animal Farm, The Giver and more.
