SCR Prompts for "The Lottery"

SCR Prompts for "The Lottery"

Writing lesson · Grades 8–10 · PDF + slides · $4 or included with All-Access

Seven short constructed response prompts for Shirley Jackson's "The Lottery." I built them for grades 8-10 to practice STAAR-style SCRs on a story students always want to talk about.

Project the slides or hand out the doc. Prompts cover the black box as a symbol, tradition and conformity, Mrs. Hutchinson's reaction, setting and mood, the title, how Jackson builds suspense, and her social commentary.

What's included

  • 7 SCR prompts, each labeled by skill (symbolism, theme, character, setting and mood, title, structure, social commentary)
  • Slide deck with the prompts (.pptx)
  • Prompt doc (editable Google Doc)

How teachers use it

  • One prompt a day as a warm-up the week after reading
  • Stations or small-group SCR practice
  • STAAR review
