Free New Year Journal Prompts for Beginning Writers

Writing prompts · Grades K–2 · PDF, 14 pages · Free

Kick off January with writing your youngest students can do on their own. Every page has a big box to draw a picture, an I Can checklist with picture cues, a picture word bank and primary writing lines.

There are 5 prompts: On New Year's Eve..., My goal for this year is..., Last year I learned..., This year I want to... and My New Year wish is.... Each one comes in two versions, one with the sentence starter in gray to trace and one with blank lines for writers ready to start on their own.

The I Can checklist reminds students to use capitals, use finger spaces, sound out words, use punctuation, draw a picture and reread their writing. A bonus My Goals page has students set a goal for school, home and themselves, with one small step for each. Every page is black and white with a party kid to color.
