Personal Narrative Unit: Family Story / School Story
Full unit · Grades 9–12, Dual credit · PowerPoint deck + Word handouts · $12
This is the narrative essay I teach in ENGL 1301. Students write 750 to 1,000 words about one moment from their family or school life, then show the reader why it changed them.
The deck walks them from picking a moment to turning in a final draft: the narrative arc, the "so what?" test, a memory map brainstorm, proverb thesis statements, hooks, show vs. tell practice, dialogue rules, time transitions, scene-by-scene structure, reflection and cutting "code phrases" like "it was a life-changing experience." Every slide has speaker notes.
