First Day of School: Beach Ball Icebreaker

Icebreaker · Grades All grades · PDF · $2

Write numbers on a beach ball, toss it, and the student who catches it answers the question under their thumb. This file gives you the questions so you're not making them up on the first day.

There are 50 prompts for each level. Elementary questions are silly and simple (robot best friend or dragon pet?). Middle school leans into would-you-rather and pop culture (Marvel or DC?). The high school and college set asks about goals, opinions and advice (what would you put on a billboard?).

What's included

• 50 questions for elementary (K-5)
• 50 questions for middle school (6-8)
• 50 questions for high school (9-12) and college

How teachers use it

• First day or first week of school
• Quick community-builder after a long break
• Brain break or the last five minutes of class
• Works without the ball too, as a question of the day

Topics: journal, writing, prompts, bell, ringer
